Sony Reader vs. Kindle

Posted Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 under Other

Sony readers were the very first ereaders to hit the market. The first ebook reader was introduced by the company in 2006. The Sony ereader was taken over by other companies in 2007. Kindle ebook reader was introduced by Amazon.com in 2007, and it took the market by storm. Kindle ereader is so popular that it has become synonymous with ereading. Sony has decided to reclaim their lost glory by inventing an ereader that will compete at the same level as Kindle.

The past models of the Sony readers were infamous because they were not wireless. In addition to that, the owner had to connect the device to a computer in order to download information from the internet. Kindle on the other hand was wireless. It also had technology that made it possible for the user to download ebooks straight from the internet.

Sony has come up with the Daily Edition; it is a wireless model that has all the above features. The ereader can be bought from any of the Sony stores. You can also make your purchase from their website. There was a time when the products had been sold out but new stock was introduced into the market.

This latest Sony reader is not the same as Kindle. The design philosophy that is adapted for this model is not the same as that of the Kindle ereader. The Daily Edition has various strengths and weaknesses that are not evident in the Kindle. It will only take you matter of days to learn how to use the user interface.

The new Sony reader has a big screen packed into a small device that is convenient to use. It makes use of touch navigation instead of the physical controls. You can opt to swipe the screen on your ereader to turn your pages instead of using the page turning button. You will also notice that is very easy to navigate on digital newspapers when you are using the Sony ereader. Kindle has disadvantages when it comes to the navigation of digital newspapers.

There are various disadvantages that the Sony reader has when compared to Kindle. The greatest disadvantage of the Daily Edition is that it is more costly than Kindle. The retail price of the Sony model is almost twice that of the Kindle. The other drawback is that it has 50% less of the number of commercial, copyright digital books that Kindle works with. Sony has 1 million out-of-copy books to its name. These books are usually of minimal interest to the ereaders. The Sony reader has eight newspapers and promises its readers of 10 more in the near future but, this is nothing compared to the 92 newspapers that can be found in Kindle.

The screen used on the Sony reader is not as bright as that one found in Kindle. This lack of brightness can be attributed to Sony’s decision to use touch screen technology on their ereaders. The poor lighting makes it very hard for a person using the Sony reader in low lighting.

The Sony reader is thinner than Kindle. It has a black metallic body that contrasts greatly with Kindle’s plastic bodywork. The Sony reader has a bigger screen and can therefore hold more text on its screen.
